Christine Vogel
Principal Investigator
Christine is the boss and steers the ship through all adventures. She received her PhD in Cambridge, UK, and did her postdoctoral research in Austin, TX. She is interested in everything that’s interesting, but particularly in proteins – their structure, evolution, and expression regulation. Apart from science, she loves the outdoors and her dog.

Shaohuan Wu
Postdoctoral Researcher
Shaohuan graduated from Zhejiang University with a biology degree, and from the Chinese Academy of Sciences with a PhD in computational biology. She likes to identify biological patterns by analyzing data, and to make sense of the patterns. Currently she is especially interested in host responses to flu vaccine/infections. Outside the lab, she likes watching movies, taking care of her pets, and walking.

Solomon Haizel
Postdoctoral Researcher
Solomon Haizel has a B.Sc. degree from the University of Ghana and a PhD in biochemistry from Hunter College (CUNY). His research interests include understanding translation regulation underlying cancer, tumorigenesis, and neurodegenerative diseases. In the Vogel lab, he is studying how certain transcripts with regulatory elements in their 5’ untranslated region might drive their protein expression, with focus on genes that play key roles in age-related neurodegeneration. In his free time, Solomon likes watching soccer, taking photographs of nature, and listening to music.

Ana Paula Zen Petisco Fiore
Postdoctoral Researcher
Ana got her PhD in Cell and Tissue Biology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, where she studied the effects of milk-born TGFbeta on p27 stability (synthesis and degradation) in the developing gut. In the Vogel lab her research is focused on motor neurons’ differential response to proteostatic stress and its (dis)regulation in neurodegenerative disease. She is also very interested in microenvironment physical and biochemical cues, 3D culture models and organoids. Outside the lab, she likes art exhibitions, photography, noir movies and music concerts.

Junjie Liu
PhD Student
Junjie graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelors of arts in biochemistry in 2022. He became fascinated with RNA biology during his last year in college. Pursuing his interest, he is currently studying how eukaryotic cells reprogram mRNA translation in response to stress. Outside of lab, Junjie enjoys trying new food and visiting the Met. He has several aquatic pets, all named after scientific terms or TS albums.

Laurelle Lee Young
PhD Student
Laurelle is a Biology PhD Student at NYU. She completed her Bachelor’s at Columbia University, where she graduated with a major in Biochemistry and a concentration in Computer Science. During her time as an undergrad researched the role of lncRNA in B cell Lymphoma. In her downtime she enjoys finding new cafes to write in her journal.

Honorary Lab Members
Goldie
Post Dog
Goldie was born on Mar. 25, 2021, in Missouri where his parents and grandparents are. He met Shaohuan in New York and became a family member of hers in June, 2021. He has been helping Shaohuan excersize and relax after work by walking with her around Washington Square Park. Besides “work”, he enjoys playing in the Dog Run, playing with Shaohuan at home, and eating chicken-flavored food.
In memoriam
Koby
Post Dog
Koby specializes on keeping The Boss sane. After secret former life and education, Koby joined the lab as a full-time grant and paper writing assistant. He is also working on his bioinformatics skills. When not supporting science and the Vogel lab, Koby enjoys eating carrots. Koby died of liver cancer in Jan. 22, 2021. But he lives forever in Christine’s heart.
Hammi
Resident Rodent
Hammi the Hamster thinks Shaohuan’s project on long-term memory formation is the best. While he doesn’t know how to read papers or how to program, he supports Shaohuan by being cute, warm, and cuddly, and by providing secret advice on proteomics data analysis. Shaohuan does not know where Hammi was born, but that does not matter as he is Shaohuan’s favorite teammate, in particular when he sits on her head. Hammi died of cancer in Sep. 22, 2021. But he lives forever in Shaohuan’s heart.
